Looking for a miracle. Dogs’ owner passed away suddenly.

UPDATE: I received word today that HALF a miracle has happened: Sam, the Chesapeake Retriever, has been placed in a new home. However not Gracie. It’s sad that they could not go to a home together, but we must all do the best we can with what we have — people and animals alike. If only their owner had not passed away… a tragedy for all involved. But we can’t look back else we will miss an opportunity that is in front of us.

We continue to look for a home for Gracie — the lighter colored dog, the Yellow Lab, in the photo below. Please share her story.

Good afternoon and Happy Holidays from American Dog Rescue!

We are writing to see if you can help spread the word for these two precious dogs who so badly need our help. Gracie is a 10-year-old Yellow Lab and Sam is a 6-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They are docile, well behaved, housebroken and good with other animals.

These two were living happily with their owner and his daughter until one month ago, when they lost the only master they’ve ever known very suddenly to a heart attack.

The owner’s daughter is a minor and must move overseas with her grandparents very soon, making finding a home for these two an urgent priority. They are in the Dallas, Texas area. However, transportation could be arranged if we find a perfect fit to adopt them.

Prissy is looking for a new home

UPDATE:Plans have changed on Prissy’s home front and she will be staying with her owner. In an email she told me, “It is [good news for me] and for Prissy. I was brought to tears every time I thought about giving her up.” This is the best and happiest ending to this story that I could have wished for. Congrats!

In October, a trucker was killed in a freak, but fiery crash on I-10 in Houston. This man was the son-in-law of Prissy’s owner. Her owner’s daughter was a couple months pregnant with their second child at the time. She is due to give birth in April and Prissy’s owner plans to be there with her, staying for a while.

The yard there is not fenced and Prissy’s owner is worried that Prissy will not get the attention she needs. So we are helping her look for a new home for Prissy.

Of Prissy, her owner writes,

She is 6 years only and I have had her since she was 5 months old. My daughter rescued her in Dallas and brought her to me. She had to have hip surgery 5 days after I got her and has done great.

She is Fox Terrier mix and weighs 13 pounds. She is very loving and likes sleeping with you.

She is potty pad trained, as I would not leave her out side when I was gone. She is up on all of her shots. I use Wellborn Vet Clinic.

She loves my grandsons; she has never bitten anyone but she does bark, a lot, at strangers and anyone who comes in my house until she gets to know them. She will jump in your lap after she gets use to you. She seems to bark more at men that anyone.

The vet said they weren’t sure if she was abused and that was what caused her hip injury or if she was born that way, but she was put out on the street at 5 months old and went into my daughter’s yard in Cedar Hill.

We are spreading the word to help Prissy find a new home. Currently, Prissy lives in College Station, TX. If you would like to know more about Prissy, you can call her owner, Charlene, after 6 pm at 979-219-8341.

A Foreclosure Dog Named Abby

Meet Abby

She was given up by her family recently because of financial hardship: foreclosure and job loss. Currently, she is being fostered by the woman who is fostering Abby’s feline companions from the same household.

I cannot imagine what emotions must go into making the decision where the best you can do for your beloved pets is to give them up. These are often “family members” who have been part of the family unit for many years. How terrible this must be for the decision maker? And what must it be like for the pet?

Especially hard for me are the stories of those whose family was so desperate that they turned their pet in to a shelter believing that this was the best solution. In so many cases, this is a death sentence for the animal (you can read some of the reasons animals are killed in shelters here). So it becomes ever more important that we, as a community of pet lovers, step up to help out before a family member is destroyed simply because of family hardship. It’s just not their fault and they should not pay the ultimate cost of it.

That said, today I received the following email and I want to share it with you.

ABBY is a sweet ole gal of about 12 years old. She has short hair and she is a Terrier/Shepherd mix. She is a very sweet little female, and a very loving and wonderful companion. Abby weighs around 38 lbs. and has clean brown/black fur.

Abby’s people lost their home due to foreclosure and loss of jobs. They had to give up Abby and her 3 cat companions. Abby has been moved around a lot during the last couple months. She is very sweet and loving, but is confused about what is going on. Abby has been to the vet, is negative on heartworms and is spayed and had a dental cleaning. She is current on all shots and even had a complete blood panel which was excellent.

She spent her first night in her new and wonderful foster home last night. In bed with them! She is feeling better today and will gain confidence every day as we search for her forever home.

Please step up and adopt this sweet baby. If you cannot adopt her right now, please share her story with your friends and family because I know there is a place for her.

Can you help us return a stolen dog?

In May 2010, Missy was stolen from her owner’s car in Tucson when they stopped at a gas station to ask for directions. In the more than a year that has past, her owner, Amber, has not stopped looking for her — regularly checking with the shelter, placing ads on Craigslist, etc.

Even after she returned to Nebraska, Amber kept looking for Missy.

Now there has been a break. Missy has been found. She is in the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson, Arizona. Above is a photo of her as she looks now.

Time is of the essence. We are asking for everyone’s help. Is there a rescue or a kind soul who will step forward and pull Missy from the shelter?

Got Room? …for a street dog?

About eight weeks ago, Boomer was spotted walking down the street near North Main and I-45 in north Houston following a man who appeared homeless. A very pregnant woman just a couple weeks shy of giving birth stopped and asked the man about the dog. The man said he was taking Boomer to a friend who had a room to see if the friend could keep Boomer. The next day, the man appeared again with Boomer in tow. His friend was unable to keep Boomer and neither was he. He asked Marcia to please find him a good home.

Boomer got into her car and off he went to start his new life. His first stop was the vet’s office to get checked out. He had an infection, so the doctor prescribed a round of antibiotics for him. Once he completed his round of meds, he was scheduled to be neutered. Then back to the kind lady’s house to recoup.

The lady has given birth and with a new baby and the space limitations of a townhouse, she and her husband are now looking for a forever home for Boomer. He is a handsome young man about a year old. He still has lots of puppy energy and seems to have had little training. He is a bit rambunctious, but he listens.

He loves people and seems to get along well with other dogs. He hasn’t had any formal training — except he knows “sit,” so his manners are a bit rough, but he wants to please and is quick to learn.

The wonder of a dog’s loyalty

Update: This baby is safe. She has been adopted by a friend of the woman who died.

When I look at this photo, I wonder:

. . . how did this dog and her companion become separated?

. . . what did they endure?

. . . how did one survive and one not?

. . . when did they become separated?

. . . how did they find each other again?

. . . how long will this dog mourn there on her grave?

. . . will she die of a lonely heart?

. . . will she be allowed to leave on her own?

. . . does her human companion know she is there?

This photo shows the closeness between two sentient beings that we all hope for in our lives. It’s pure and simple; it’s heartfelt. To me, this photo shows something wonderful about someone I never even knew.

Can you love some more?

With the millions of cats and dogs killed each year across the world, the question is “can you love some more?” Can you open your heart and your home to adopt another cat or dog?

More than sharing their stories and their photos, THEY NEED HOMES.

Will you step up?

Think how the numbers would change if everyone who says they are an animal lover adopted a cat or dog from a rescue or a shelter.

Think of the impact and the lives saved.

Please… think about it, then step up and love some more.

If you compare the number of animals killed in a community shelter to the city’s population of people, it requires only a small percentage of people to empty a shelter of it’s healthy, adoptable animals.

For example: say you live in a city where there are 285,000 people. And say the average family consists of four people. 285,000 divided by 4 = 71,250 families.

Say your local shelter kills 2500 animals in a year. 2500 animals divided by 71,250 families = .035. That number represents the percentage of households needed to save all the shelter animals euthanized in a year in our sample community. — 3.5% of the community’s households.

This sample was generated from the actual numbers for 2009 from an actual Canadian city.

Add another percentage and I bet the area rescues will be empty, too.

When you look at it that way, you can begin to get your head around how needless the killing really is.

“Over the past 15,000 years, we have succeeded in domesticating and thoroughly dominating a species that now is completely dependent upon us to survive. The gray wolf, which the dog was once domesticated from, hunts for it’s food, breeds autonomously, possesses natural immunities to disease and lives a life completely free of and in fact, antithetical to, human existence. Dogs on the other hand, have been bred for millenia to serve humans: as companions, workers and protectors. They are utterly subservient to our treatment and rely entirely on us for food, shelter, affection, amusement and good health.

“All they really require is the most minimal of care and compassion and we continue to fail them.

“We allow them to breed rampantly and then kill 4 million every year in shelters because there isn’t enough space; we make them into designer breeds like Labradoodles and Cockapoos because it’s a charming mix while 30% of the homeless dogs in shelters are pure breds; we abuse them, neglect them and even fight them until the death.

“Don’t we owe these ancient companions more respect? We show more reverence and good will to the very least and most despicable of our own species while constantly using and abusing the faithful creatures that have been at our side for centuries.” — Traer Scott, Photographer

I was quite moved after I stumbled over these photos and Traer Scott’s words. Enough that I want to share them with you. More and more people from all walks of life are coming forward to lend their time and their talents to saving our homeless pets. By bringing their faces to you, perhaps you will better realize that the millions we kill in shelters every year — that’s about one animal every 8 seconds — are living, breathing, loving animals who did nothing wrong other than having the misfortune of ending up in our shelters. It’s really time to re-evaluate our thinking. It’s time to take killing off the table.

Some of the less heard about heros in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan are dogs. The ones that are adopting our troops because, in our troops, they are finding kindness and attention.

You see in Afghanistan, dogs are considered a disgrace. “According to their culture, if you’re bitten by a dog, you cannot get to Allah. The animals there have no voice, they are treated like trash, used for target practice, blown up, runover and used in dog fights,” says Anna Maria Cannan who has untaken the task of bringing five dogs back to the US. Dogs that have served as watch dogs in camp protecting our soldiers.

Here’s their story. I hope after you read it, you will consider making a donation towards the costs of transporting these little four-legged soldiers to the US.

More than just a puppy story…

My boyfriend of 5 years, Chris, deployed in December and is currently stationed in Afghanistan. A few weeks prior to [his] arrival, a suicide bomber entered the combat outpost in the middle of the night where Chris is now located. The dogs on post must have heard the intruder… they started barking and took off after the bomber; in fact one of the dogs, Rufus, grabbed a hold of the bomber’s leg while pregnant Target and Sasha attacked and alerted the troops. The suicide bomber was startled… realizing his cover was blown, he ended up blowing himself up too early so he never made it into the living quarters. A few of the soldiers had some injuries but everyone survived.

One of the dogs was killed and the two other dogs were injured but nursed back to good health. The dog who was killed was Sasha — one of the mothers of the puppies born on base.

Shortly after this incident, the soldiers arrived at their final destination where they befriended the stray dogs and the litter of puppies whom at this time were only 4-5 weeks old. The mother of these puppies was Target whom was badly injured in the blast but ended up surviving.

Sasha’s puppy was left without a mother and, as Chris put it, “Target took him under her wing.” The two living heroes in this story are Rufus and Target, these amazing dogs alerted our soldiers which ended up saving over 50 soldiers lives that day. Sasha was laid to rest, her injuries were just too severe.

Chris, being the animal lover that he is, started taking care of all the dogs in his spare time along with the other soldiers. The puppies are now growing and have become very fond of our soldiers. They have built a bond that cannot be broken. These dogs are the only sense of normalcy that our soldiers experience in a land where life is less than ideal. Our soldiers feed these dogs from their own plates, care for them on a daily basis, and treat them as if they were their own.

I don’t hear from Chris very often, but when I do, you can hear the smile on his face; his voice just lights up when he talks about these puppies. There are three puppies and a few older dogs that the soldiers tend to on a daily basis. The military does not condone befriending animals over there, but these dogs and cats tend to find their way to our soldiers. It’s as if they know the difference between Americans and Afghans. This fact is confirmed daily as Chris tells me stories on how the dogs growl at the Afghan soldiers but show nothing but love to the American soldiers. Dogs have a keen sense of danger and they truly can differentiate good people from bad. There are numerous stories where animals are the result of life saving stories… heroes come in many different forms.

I feel strongly about rescuing these puppies in honor of their mothers who saved over 50 soldiers’ lives. These puppies were born on a combat outpost and were immediately exposed to food and love from our soldiers. Living as strays once the guys return home would be a terrible thing for them.

I am currently in the process of raising money to help get these little pups home. While juggling work and school, I have been fundraising by selling candles and running an online raffle to help rescue these animals. It is a very expensive process and I can’t do it alone.

It costs about $3,000 a dog to cover the costs for transport, vaccinations, quarantine, and transport from the base to the shelter and a nearby airport. I am currently working with an organization out of the UK called Nowzaddogs which has been involved with a few other successful rescues to the US. It is my hope that we can recognize this organization for helping us Americans in succeeding to get the animals to the US. The more we raise, the more animals we will rescue. Unfortunately the SPCA International never got back to me which is why I got in touch with this organization… they have been extremely helpful throughout the process.
