Paying it forward in Syracuse

It is estimated by rescue groups that 10 million pets will be abandoned this year in the US. This number staggers and motivates Ruth Sturgis.

Sturgis and her husband, David own Dog Daze Healthy Pet Shop in North Syracuse. Now they also operate Hardeko Helping Paws Pantry, a charity that offers free food and medicine to pets of proud people who have fallen on hard times. It’s their goal to help people keep their pets rather then abandon or surrender them.

“We’re going to give you the food, and we’re going to encourage you to pay it forward,” Sturgis explains, either through volunteer work or making donations to the pantry once they are back on their feet.

How can you help?

Three ways:

Donate food, beds, crates, collars, any sort of pet care items to Hardeko; call 410-1278 for details.
If you know someone on the verge of giving up their pet for financial reasons, steer them to the pantry at 309 South Main St., North Syracuse.
If your volunteer fire department in Central New York lacks animal respirators, ask the department to notify Hardeko. The pantry will donate several respirators in the coming months.

The Food Bank of Siouxland is a nonprofit organization that distributes food to nearly 200 charitable agencies in a 14-county, tri-state area. Agencies served include emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers, homeless and domestic violence shelters, day care facilities, nursing homes, and community homes for the disabled.

Homeless Shelter Offering Food For Pets

“A Davenport ministry is now providing food for pets as well as for people. King’s Harvest serves meals to the poor and homeless several times a week, and starting Friday, it will also hand out pet food to those in need.

“The shelter says they have had a lot of requests for “doggie bags” recently, and that literally means take-away containers for dogs. Volunteers also say Quad City animal shelters are full and they hope to keep more animals from being abandoned.

“One client at King’s Harvest says hard times are also hard on pets. “There’s a lot of people displaced at the moment and have pets in their vehicles along with their children and themselves.”

“Director Terri Gleize says people in a tough spot shouldn’t have to make such difficult decisions. “I know they are going through really hard times and no one wants to give up something they love even in hard times.”

“King’s Harvest clients can come get pet food once a month. The first shipment of food is being donated by Purina. Donations from the community are also being accepted at King’s Harvest on West 3rd Street in Davenport.”

“Terri Gleize, the director of King’s Harvest, never thought the mission of the ministry that aids impoverished people in the Quad-Cities would expand to helping homeless people with pets.

“But she noticed the need for such a program when several people with pets in tow came to an overflow homeless shelter that King’s Harvest operated this past winter.

“”I’ve always been a big animal person, so my heart goes out for people,” Gleize said. “I don’t want anyone to lose their pet if they’re going through a hard time. It would be horrible to lose something that you really love.”

“King’s Harvest has a few foster homes available to provide temporary housing for pets, but it is looking for more. The ministry also provides dog and cat food to people who visit its food bank, and it operates a rescue center for cats.

“We’re seeing a whole different crowd of people coming in,” Gleize said. “It’s a whole lot of people maybe in their late 20s with kids who have lost their house and are moving into apartments that won’t take pets.”

“King’s Harvest is out of dog food at present and in need of donations of 15- to 20-pound bags. Canned cat food also is in high demand. Donations can be dropped off from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 9-10 a.m. on Saturdays at 824 W. 3rd St., Davenport. Monetary donations can be sent to 5837 Wisconsin Ave., Davenport, IA 52806.”

I get so excited when I read about another community pet food bank opening. This time it’s through Faithful Friends, a no-kill animal shelter in Wilmington, Delaware.

The service these pet food banks offer can be the very thing that helps a family keep their pet. Sadly turning a beloved companion in to a shelter is often a death sentence. There are not enough no-kill shelters and there are so many pets being turned in. If you or someone you know needs help, maybe this article will help.

Pet owners struggling to pay the bills during this recession can get some help from Faithful Friends.

The no-kill animal shelter in Wilmington has opened a pet-food bank to offer free dog and cat food for residents who are in financial need. The idea, said Jane Pierantozzi, executive director of Faithful Friends, is to keep pets and their people together.

Since the recession began, the shelter has seen a four-fold increase in the number of animals being given for adoption. Cash-strapped families are finding that they just can’t take care of their pets while trying to take care of themselves, Pierantozzi said.

“When we started doing work in the community with our free and low-cost spay/neuter clinics, we realized there was a need,” she said. “And with the foreclosure crisis, it became more evident.”

Residents who come in for the pet food are asked to fill out a short application stating their need. The shelter staff doesn’t screen the applicants or run a credit check — they rely on honest answers.

“We do not turn people away,” Pierantozzi said. “And nobody is abusing it. People who need help are coming out for help.”

Andy and Naomi Lancaster of Middletown have been relying on the program, which launched about five months ago, to help them feed several rescue dogs they have taken in, some with medical problems.

The Lancasters are school bus drivers, so their work dries up during the summer.

“It’s an expensive time of year,” Naomi Lancaster said. “I found out about the food bank the day we came home from unemployment.”

She thinks the pet-food bank is a great idea and said animal lovers shouldn’t feel ashamed about asking for help if it means keeping their pets healthy.

“I would encourage anybody who needs the help not to be embarrassed and accept it,” Lancaster said.

The food bank is supplied by donations from the public, other nonprofits such as the Humane Society, and stores including Concord Pet Food & Supplies and Petco Corp.

But with the increase in demand, Pierantozzi said, the shelter could use more help.

Donations of pet food and money are sought, as well as coupons for pet food and treats. Right now, the greatest need is for dry and canned cat food.

Donations and coupons can be dropped off at the shelter at 12 Germay Drive in Wilmington during business hours, which are 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Those also are the hours of operation for the pet-food bank.

Prince William SPCA Opens Pet Food Pantry

Donations of Food Being Accepted for Families in Need
Manassas, VA (PRWEB) June 10, 2009 — When tough times strike, people turn to food pantries to keep from going hungry. But you will not find any canned vegetables or boxes of macaroni and cheese at the Prince William SPCA’s new pet food pantry, which is the first of its kind in the area. Located in the lobby of the Manassas City Animal Adoption Center in Manassas, the pet food pantry opened this past weekend and is now stocked with cat and dog food.

“Families in our community who fall on hard times should not be concerned that they need to give up a beloved pet because they cannot afford food. The pantry keeps families together and numbers down at the local shelters. We feel this is a win-win for everyone,” says Prince William SPCA President Melissa Korzuch.

Needy families in Manassas, Manassas Park and Prince William County may visit the pantry anytime during regular hours twice per month to receive assistance. There are no income requirements but is recommended that people using this service only take what they need so that others may also be helped. The pantry is funded by donations so at times food may be limited. Korzuch adds, “This program is not meant to be a long-term solution but rather a helping hand when times are tough. We hope that everyone who uses this program will give back to it when their circumstances change.”

The pantry is accepting donations of unopened wet or dry pet food for puppies, dogs, kittens and cats and will also accept bird, rabbit, and other small animal food. Donations of gift cards from Wal-Mart, Target, Wegmans, and other stores where pet food is sold may be mailed directly to the Prince William SPCA at PO Box 6631, Woodbridge, VA 22195. The pantry receives no subsidy from state, city or county agencies and relies entirely on the public to stock its shelves.
The community is asked to support the pantry by helping to collect food. It is very easy to support this project by simply placing a donation box at work, school, church or your favorite place of business. Parents, teachers or scout/4-H leaders should note that collecting donations for the pantry is a fantastic way to get children and teens involved with helping animals, especially during the summer months.

Pet Food Pantry is open: Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri, 10 am – 1 pm AND 4 pm – 6 pm; Wednesday, 5 pm – 7 pm; Saturday 10 am – 1 pm; Closed Sundays and Holidays. State College, PA Pet Food Pantry Open for Business

As the economy continues to sputter, more and more local families are making some tough budget decisions. In Centre County, two women are determined to make sure feeding the family pet is not a casualty of the recession.

“Since the middle of last year was about the first that I’ve heard someone on the phone say ‘I really want to keep my dog. I really love my dog. I can’t afford to feed it,’” Kim Bierly, of Centre County Golden Retriever Rescue, said.

In less than a year Bierly and Caitlin Rivers have the Pet Pantry of Centre County up and running. In three weeks the two have distributed more than 700 pounds of donated dog and cat food. They believe the family pet cannot be forgotten in an economic downturn.

“People just aren’t willing to give up their dog because it’s inconvenient and that’s putting people in a really bad spot, and it’s my job to make sure that doesn’t happen anymore,” Rivers said.

The goal is to eventually get one thousand pounds of dog and cat food donated every month. Their efforts are not going to end once the economy picks back up.

“(Think about) our senior citizens on fixed incomes. For them, it’s a permanent situation. They need the companionship, but sometimes their cat or dog is the only living creature they see everyday,” Bierly said.

Currently, only dog and cat food is being collected, and the ladies are using a trusted distribution system to get Fido and Felix their meals.

“People are already going to the food bank for human food donations, and a lot of them are the same people that need additional support for their pets. We’re using the human food banks to distribute the food primarily,” Rivers said.

Some donations come from local businesses, but Rivers and Bierly hope the bulk of the pet pantry will be stocked by local residents. For more information about donating, or getting some help from the pet pantry click here: www.petpantry.yolasite.com

Daffy’s Soup Kitchen Still Needs Your Help

Daffy’s has recently learned that, due to the current economic crunch, their warehouse sponsor can no longer afford to help cover their lease expense and they will be faced with the possibility of closing the warehouse by September 1st if other sponsors don’t step forward to assist.

The need for a soup kitchen to provide free food to pets continues to grow. Daffy’s now has multiple locations in eight states, has been contacted by 20 other states to start up, and in Georgia alone, Daffy’s Pet Soup Kitchen serves more than 30 counties. This is all done with the help of volunteers and monetary and food donations. In addition, the initial startup costs and insurance is covered under Daffy’s umbrella; a division of the SOS Club.

Long Island Cares Food Bank to Distribute Pet Food

Aiming to stop hunger among pets as well as people, the Long Island Cares food bank Wednesday will begin distributing pet food to those in need.

The Hauppauge-based food bank, which supplies hundreds of Long Island food pantries, has teamed up with the Animal Relief Fund in Manhattan to provide dog and cat food to needy families with pets.

“Families should not be in a position where they have to give up their pets because they can’t feed them,” said Paule Pachter, executive director of LI Cares. “You wouldn’t give up a child because you can’t feed them. Why would you give up a dog or cat?”

Shelters across the country have reported an influx in the numbers of people giving up their pets due to the economy.

“The shelters in New York City have reported an increase in dogs being abandoned, and on Long Island also there’s been an increase in abandoned dogs and cats,” said Susan Kaufman, president and founder of the Animal Relief Fund.

Pachter said that, starting Wednesday, food pantries will be able to order pet food, both wet and dry, from LI Cares to distribute to their clients.

Carolyn Gumbs, office manager of the Long Island Council of Churches in Riverhead, which runs a food pantry, said the donations of pet food her agency sometimes receives are always popular with clients.

“When we do receive cat food or dog food, we just put it out and it goes immediately,” Gumbs said. “If people have animals, they need to be fed too. ”

Lillian Woudsma, director of the Sag Harbor Food Pantry, said she welcomes the program. “There certainly is a need for it,” Woudsma said.

LI Cares is starting off with several hundred pounds of dog and cat food, and will seek more from stores, manufacturers and the public.

Pachter said the pet food won’t detract from the core mission of serving people. “If LI Cares can expand to support people and their pets, why not?” he said.

Humane Society of Indianapolis starts Pet Food Pantry

When times are tough, people begin to cut back on non-necessities. For some people this includes their pets. Pet care is not inexpensive and the costs can stress an already overburdened family. If the choice is dog food or baby formula, the dog is going to be the one to lose. These animals are then either dumped on the streets or taken to already over-crowded shelters. Since there are already so many animals in shelters, it may take that animal some time to get adopted. While the pet is waiting in the shelter, he may be exposed to illnesses from other pets or may become very stressed from the environment. When these things happen and the pet needs time to recover, it just delays his trip to his new home that much longer.

The Humane Society of Indianapolis has decided to try to stop these animals from ever having to leave their homes. They have started a new pet pantry to aid people that are having financial difficulties. This program will help the pet’s owner provide food for his pet rather than having to surrender it. You can drop off canned or bagged food for cats or dogs at the Humane Society. Their address is 7929 Michigan Rd in Indianapolis. You can also drop off monetary donations or donate online. If that is not convenient, you can drop off donations at any of the area Pet Supplies Plus stores. Donate to the Pet Pantry this month at Pet Supplies Plus and receive a coupon for a free dog wash.

Please support the Pet Pantry and Pet Supplies Plus. Next time you’re picking up pet food for yourself, pick up an extra bag for the pantry. The Sunday paper usually has coupons for dog and cat food and treats so you can save yourself some money. It may not be the same food that your pet eats but it’s better than being surrendered or left to fend for yourself. If you find yourself needing some food assistance for your pets, please contact the Humane Society.
