Home Remedy for Parvo

By isak, June 21, 2009

Canine Parvovirus (“parvo”) attacks rapidly reproducing cells — such as those that line the gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow, lymph nodes and heart.

Parvo is highly contagious and is transmitted from dog to dog via contaminated droplets and feces. It can be carried on the dog’s hair and feet, as well as on contaminated cages, shoes and other objects. Dogs of all ages can be affected, but the highest rate of death occurs in puppies less than five months of age.

Dogs that develop parvo will show symptoms 3-10 days after being exposed. Symptoms include: vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea (usually bloody), and fever.

The biggest needs in parvo treatment are fluid and electrolyte replacement so the dog stays hydrated, and medication to control diarrhea and vomiting. Diarrhea and vomiting can quickly dehydrate a dog.

Top 10 facts of the Parvovirus:

1 – The Canine Parvovirus is world wide.
2 – Parvo is a highly contagious and deadly disease.
3 – Even fully-vaccinated puppies are susceptible to the infection.
4 – Parvo mostly affects dogs under 1 year of age but an average of 6 weeks old.
5 – Bleach is the only product to kill the Parvovirus in the environment (with the exception of clinically tested products used to clean kennels).
6 – The virus incubates in the glands of the puppy for 3 to 15 days before showing symptoms.
7 – Once the incubation period is over the Parvovirus will work its way into the intestinal tract.
8 – After the Canine Parvovirus is in the intestinal tract the Parvo will start eating away at the velli and lining of the intestinal walls. Therefore bloody stools will be apparent.
9 – The puppy will either pass away from a lack of hydration or low glucose levels (blood sugars).
10 – If treating with Sub-Q fluid, do not over hydrate after the puppy has pulled through the worst of the virus as it will put a strain on the heart, cause edema, and may develop an abscess.

Are Some Dog Breeds More Susceptible?

According to The Merck Veterinary Manual, 8th ed., it appears that some breeds, most notably the Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherds, Pit Bulls, and Labrador Retrievers are at an increased risk for this disease. Conversely, Toy Poodles and Cockers appear to be at a reduced risk for contracting this disease. It is important to remember, however, that any breed can get Parvovirus.

TWO MAIN SYNDROMES OF PARVO:

1. Diarrhea Syndrome (Enteritis)
After an incubation period of 7-14 days, the first signs of parvo are severe depression with loss of appetite, followed by vomiting. The dog will appear to be in extreme pain with a tucked-up abdomen. Within 24-hours, a high fever develops (up to 106 degrees F) and profuse diarrhea that is frequently bloody. Mouth inflammation can also occur. Almost no other canine disease exhibits these symptoms.

2. Cardiac Syndrome (Myocarditis)
This form of canine parvo affects the heart muscle, especially in puppies less than 3 months of age. Puppies with this form stop nursing, cry out and gasp for air. Death can occur suddenly or in a few days. Puppies that recover will sometimes develop a chronic form of congestive heart failure that leads to death in weeks or months.

The success of treatment for parvo depends on the form and the severity of the CPV (Canine Parvo Virus) infection as well as the age of the dog. In puppies that are between 6- and 20-weeks of age, there is a 1-4 week interval when they are most vulnerable despite being vaccinated. This is because the maternal antibodies they received through their mother’s milk are declining and therefore no longer protective but still interfere with the vaccine.

Dogs that recover from parvo are immune to the disease.

How is Parvo Treated?

There is no treatment specifically for the Parvovirus at this time. Treatment is supportive care, which includes any or all of the following:

  • Oral electrolyte fluids (ex: Pedialyte) – if the case is mild and the animal isn’t vomiting
  • Subcutaneous (SQ) or intravenous (IV) fluids to maintain hydration to counter the extreme fluid losses from vomiting and diarrhea that are so typical with this disease. Many vets will provide this so you can administer this at home. It hydrates by bypassing the stomach.
  • Anti-vomiting/nausea medications – to prevent further damage from vomiting and to keep the patient comfortable as possible.
  • Antibiotics – because the virus has potential to slough the intestinal tract, antibiotics help protect against secondary infection.
  • Blood or Plasma transfusions – to replace protein loss, provide antibodies, help with anemia.

For some perspective: a healthy dog drinks about 1/2 to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day. So a 10 lb dog would normally drink about 1 cup of water each day. If your pup has vomiting and diarrhea, the amount needed increases to make up for the loss.

Is There a Home Remedy?

To follow is a home remedy I stumbled on for treating canine parvo on the internet and wanted to reprint it in case anyone may need it. It addresses the biggest needs in a treatment: fluid and electrolyte replacement, and medication to control diarrhea and vomiting. Also read through the comments below this post. Many people have kindly shared what has worked for them.

This is an extremely hardy virus. It resists most household cleaners. The best disinfectant is Clorox (one part bleach to 30 parts water).. Here are some bleach alternatives.

My puppy had Parvo, he was only 8 weeks old, and just a few pounds. I took him to the vet and realized that it would be anywhere from 600-1500 dollars to cure him, even then he may not survive. So I looked up puppy parvo on Google.com for any alternatives, I found many things that people had tried, and they said it worked, so I chose the raw eggs, children’s Pedialite, and children’s pepto method. What you will need is the following;

* Eggs (enough to last several days)
* Children’s Pepto
* Instant rice
* Hamburger
* Children’s Pedialite (or Gatorade will work also)
* A Syringe for feeding
* You might also want to get puppy training pads or newspaper

Directions
First take your dog and place him in a sterile dog cage, with the puppy pad or newspaper covering the bottom because there will be lots of throw up and lots of diarrhea. Then sterilize your whole home. I used a spray found in the pet area of WalMart, its called “Odo Ban.” It also smells really good. Then used bleach [1 part bleach to 30 parts water] on all hard floors and dog cage. After everything is clean, DO NOT let your puppy out of his/her cage until he is completely healed.

Then I took a raw egg and blended it with a fork and put it in the Syringe and force fed him. I gave him 2 tablespoons of egg and 1 tablespoon of Pedialite every 4 hours for 3 days. I also gave him the children’s pill form of Pepto 3 times a day. I cut the pill in half and put it at the back of his throat. The serving size for your puppy may be greater depending on his size. I did this for about 3 days and until he was a lot more playful, and until his diarrhea was gone. (I also changed his pad every time he went potty and sterilized his cage every time to keep the parvo contained.)

After the 3 days was up I boiled instant rice and ground up hamburger and fed him 1/4 of a cup every four hours. (try this one time and wait to see if he can hold down the solid food. If its thrown back up, go back to eggs and pedielite for 2 more days. Then try it again.) After the first day of giving them the rice (and the puppy kept it down), try soft dog food the next day. If they keep that down, then you’re good to go, give them a sterile bath and they are now free to run around and play.

Why this works
This method works because puppy’s die from being dehydrated, not from the sickness itself, the key is keeping them from throwing up and healthy while the sickness goes away. They need lots of electrolytes. The Raw eggs for Nutrition, and pepto to keep there tummy’s calm. It worked for my little boy, and I hope it works for you. He is now the happiest little thing. Don’t forget to follow up with another vet visit to make sure all is well. Keep them in the house and off the outside ground for at least a week more just so you wont spread the sickness to any other dogs. Good luck i hope this helps you 🙂 Jessica F.

P.S. My puppy is about 3 pounds, so there might me a slight change in feeding, Be sure not to over feed, were not trying to make them full, just enough to keep them alive.

I was really happy to have found your site. Yesterday, I went to the vet with my 7 month, 3 pound long haired chihuahua. He told me that it was Parvo and it was a very serious virus, fatal to canines. I have 2 more at home and a Golden retreiver. He highly suggested I don’t bring her back home and get her euthanized… which, I painfully did after 1 hour of pure denial that I wasn’t going to leave with my dog and an expensive vet bill…

I got home and found my two chihuahua’s were doing still fine… Today, my son’s dog, Charley, 1 year old, didn’t wnat to eat and started looking depressed like his younger sister…. and there it was… that damn smell in his feces. I found many sites, with many good ideas…. but then your site!!! Thank you!!!

By evening, both chihuahuas are vomiting and refuse to eat or drink… It took the youngest one, (Buster 7months) 3 times to actually keep the pepto down and Charley took 2 times… THE CRUSHING THE PILLS MIXED WITH 1 tsp of PEDIALITE (No Flavor), fed with seringe works very well with my dogs. Even if I did get them to swallow them, they wouldn’t melt in their stomach, I would see it 2 hours down the road in the vomit… So try this if you are having difficulties.

By midnight, they are both looking like they are responding to the treatment… Thank you sooo much! Wish I had known for my little Mandy 🙁

    • isak says:

I am both happy and sad about your story. I am so sorry for your loss of Mandy. And I am so happy that the other babies are responding. It sounds like you caught it early. Keep us posted on their progress. Thank you so much for sharing your tips. I am sure they will be helpful. Best to you.

My puppy contracted parvo and I did the pepto, pedialyte and raw egg thing. She is slowly recovering and is more responsive. Before that she was throwing up and had diarrhea for a day and a half. It took a three tries before she stopped throwing up. I gave charco caps initially but it was not having lasting effect. After half day of charcol and pedialyte she threw up again – then I gave her pepto tab crushed in 3 tablespoons of water about two hours apart. First two times she threw up then after third time she held it down. I waited one hour and then gave half raw egg. Its been two hours and no diarrhea no throwing up. I’m just afraid to give her too much too soon – waiting for a little while longer. I have had little sleep for two days and am afraid to fall asleep.

    • isak says:

I can understand the fear of falling asleep. Sounds like you are making progress against the throwing up. We are all pulling for you guys!

I just got my baby girl 5 days ago, 4 month old german shepard. I was so excited because she was my first dog, I named her Matahya. Two days ago she stopped acting herself and became sleeping not eating and drinking, she began to puke up white foamy stuff. Day 2 she was still puking a bit and had some diarrhea(no blood) later on that day she ate some soft dog food and drank lots, and started to play again…towards the end of the night she become sick again.. and resumed sleeping not eating, drank only a few.. until then again the white foamy puke began.. she continued to do this all day on an empty stomach.. but was drinking some water. Puking continued all night.. but she was drinking still.. NOW today she is really sick, and I am now aware she has parvo.. she hasnt ate today.. and drinking little water.. about 30 mins ago I saw this website.. I decided to mix her up some egg and pedalyte and so far she has kept it down,, I am praying and crossing my fingers and going to keep repeating this until I see some changes.. WISH ME LUCK.. I already love her and I dont want to loose her :'(

    • isak says:

It might not be parvo. You mentioned very little diarrhea. The most common cause of vomiting white foam is some type of stomach upset. It will often occur if your dog drank water too quickly after exercising or ate something that disagreed with her, such as grass or an inedible substance or it could be an obstruction somewhere, or even bloating or an allergic reaction to something in her food. Try to remember what she has eaten. Ensure the dog is well hydrated and lay her down somewhere soft. Make sure your dog is still able to walk around a little bit.

If the vomiting continues, visit your veterinarian to make sure your dog hasn’t swallowed something that she can’t digest.

      Best to you.

I wish I would have seen this website before I took my 8 week old baby to the vet. So far my baby is 2 days at the emergency clinic and he surprisingly has normal white blood cell count (which is good) and will be receiving a blood transfusion soon because he’s been having bloody diarrhea every so often. He is showing signs of anemia. Vet is using blood from a dog that once had parvo because this dog will be able to share antibodies with my pup. I think its awesome considering the donor dog is the vet’s own dog. Wish you all luck.

    • isak says:

We are wishing you all the best, too! It sounds like you are in great hands! Thank you for sharing your experience. It will surely help others! Best to you and your baby.

I have a 5 month old chichaua (Petey)and this is the third night he’s been sick. I took him to the vet, they tested him and it was positive for parvo, They sent me home with 50.00 worth of meds that havent helped at all. Im also doing pedilite and pepto to settle his tummy. What has me concerned the most right now is my daughter was babysitting him today and she called me, he had diarrhea which was pure blood and a lot of it. He has since done this twice since I returned home. I am doing what the vet told me and some home remedies I found on here. I am very worried that we’re gonna lose this battle and he’s my baby.

    • isak says:

Bloody diarrhea can be a very serious indicator. Call your vet and get his/her input… and ask if you can add some pumpkin to his food. Plain canned pumpkin — without any spices — can help with both diarrhea and constipation. Perhaps you can add a small amount to what you are feeding. Good luck and best to your baby.

  7. isak says:

    1-2 tsp of Pediolyte.

I have a 6month old puppy who just got parvo about 4 days ago she is throwing up and diarea I just started her on this method will it still help her get better I sure hope so or is it to late. she throws up what ever I give her please let me know

    • isak says:

If you read through the comments, you will see what has worked for other people. I believe keeping your baby hydrated is one of the most important things. Throwing up and diarrhea depletes the liquid in their bodies. People have tried different things to keep the liquid down, and they have talked about what has worked for them.

Hi I hope everyone and their babies are well. Just an update Bolt and Old man ( now renamed Dobby) are in excellent health. I am glad I found this site when I did. We have had a few problems, ie Dobby has been completely changed by his illness, he is very aggressive towards cats and other small animals. And then there is the problem with Bolt who is such a cuddly people dog, we had been sorting out getting her spaded sometime ago and the vets informed us that it was best to wait til she was a lot stronger and had her first season ( first time I’d heard of this!) well umm no sign of her season at all. took her back nearly 2 months ago when she was 10mths old they did some checks. the little moo is pregnant and seems to very chuffed grrr lol. she’s about ready to have them. the vets are a tad bit confused as the only dog she’s been around has been done sometime ago!?!?!? And they are surprised she is absolutely fine. isak hope you and yours are well. love and hugs to everyone xxx

hi! thanks for posting the article, I followed everything that is written and it saved my puppy. =)

  13. Fodie says:

    Hi,
Just coming back on to let you know the Luke is all better, up and running around and slowly gaining some weight back. He is begging for food all the time and back to annoying our 2 year old walker coonhound. My husband is over the moon about him being well again and is talking about taking him out in a couple weeks to pheasant hunt. My kids are also very thankful that he survived because he loves them and they love him, I have never seen a dog so dedicated to his little owners (brothers and sister so to speak). Thank you!

  14. Fodie says:

That’s a great invention! I actually mixed it in some pumpkin and made it into a paste. He was not happy about it but was not stubborn either. He’s up and moving more than yesterday though, so I think we are on the mend! 🙂

  15. Fodie says:

Honestly he has not been vomiting very much, or had a lot of diarrea either. It comes and goes, but he still seems to be just fine as far as being hydrated. His gums are nice and pink, and when he has lost fluids he have the sense to replace them. He is a little weak (to be expected) but will get up and go outside to go potty, he is going out every 3 hours or so to pee. I think all things considered he is doing very well. I would just like to see him perk up a bit more. He did wag his tail when he saw me thing morning <3. I really would like to see him eat something but do not want to force him either. Any suggestions on how to give him the wormer if he is not interested in eating?

    • isak says:

That’s good news. Most of my dogs will let me open their mouths and put a pill at the back of their throat. I then close their mouth and blow on their nose. Seems to work. I also have a “piller”… it’s like an oral syringe with little “hands” on the end that hold the pill. You direct this towards the back of their throat and push the plunger. It delivers the pill with a short burst of water which makes cats and dogs swallow!!! Nice. eh?

Otherwise, is there some food that your dog just cannot resist eating that you can hide the pill in?

  16. Fodie says:

Roundworms for sure. He won’t eat but is still eager to drink. He threw up in the night and there were a lot more worms. How can I give him the wormer if he won’t eat, and could it upset his sore tummy more?

    • isak says:

How often is he throwing up? Does he still have diarrhea?

Call your vet for their input. Or call several, but they may tell you to bring him in if they are unfamiliar with him. Can you call the vet the previous owner used?

The vomiting will dehydrate him and could cause him to develop electrolyte imbalances and more. Could he also have some kind of obstruction — like he ate something that is stuck?

    • isak says:

Saw this today about roundworms: //www.petmd.com/blogs/purelypuppy/lradosta/2011/dec/roundworm_infections_in_puppies

  17. Fodie says:

He had 2 sets of his vacs, but we got him from some people who could not keep him, so we were going to go get him boosters. Although yesterday he seemed to get worse. He had been throwing up and has diarrea. There are worms in both. I am going to wait till tomorrow to make sure he feels better before giving him a chemical wormer. He is drinking gatorade and water on his own. I think he has a good chance because this has been his 4th day of being a little “off”. Thanks for the reply and any other advice would be appreciated.

    • isak says:

Do you know what kind of worms? Tapeworms, maybe? Roundworms? The worms could be a lot of what his problem is… please worm him as soon as you can. Canned pumpkin (not the pie filling though) can help with diarrhea… a couple tablespoons on top of his food. It may take a couple days to see the results from the pumpkin.

  18. Fodie says:

    Hi,
I have a new puppy, he is a 14mo German Shorthair. He is a big guy at about 85lbs. He does not seem to be feeling well, although he has only thrown up once and it was solid stuff. The reason I suspect he has parvo is that we lost a little 4mo old chocolate lab/german shorthair mix to it a few months ago. I did my best to disinfect the whole house, but I am wondering if it is likely that he has this? He seems to be laying around and not as playful as usual. But does not seem to be all that sick either. Time will tell I suppose. Can you offer any advice on what to give him to fend off the virius before it hits him hard?

    • isak says:

Hopefully, your puppy is just feeling a bit under the weather and it’s nothing more serious than that. Like us, they can have an off day. But I can certainly understand your concern. The best preventative I can suggest is:

      • getting him vaccinated
      • keeping the area clean (especially of feces)
      • limiting access from any other dogs you don’t own

Was there anything in what he threw up that may have been the trigger? Has he been wormed recently?

hi all. Re Ashley. I’m sorry to hear about everything happening. I hope she’s ok, I know it’s a bit weird but see what colour her gums are. as for the smell it can some times not appear until the diarrea/blood. old man stunk to high heaven from the 2nd day were as bolt didn’t get whiffy at all.

  21. Ashley says:

We sold a dog who ultimately ended up coming back to us recently (we couldnt let her end up at the pound). after a few days she started acting odd. Acted like parvo only no smell at all and blood in the vomit. (I have delt with Parvo many years ago but always used a vet.) The poor baby ended up passing away 2 hrs before the vet opened up. Right now we are in a super tight situation. My health is very bad and I am on bedrest cause of my pregnancy being high risk with my current health issues. I am not able to take the dog in now that just starting showing signs similar to parvo but again no smell at all… I am going to try this and i will let you know how it works out please pray for us and our little girl she is only 3 months old.

bolt is completely better, and up to her old tricks, vets are not happy that i’d treated her at home. old man is improving. we’ve taken him off the meds that the vets gave us as they were making him vomit/diarrhea. he is on about 15 eggs a day ( greedy git) and has bits of dry bread morning and night ( in the morning he likes to have a bit of marmite) he is still really skinny but getting there. thanks for your support and wishes

    • isak says:

      What is marmite?

This has been incredible to watch and I am so happy you took us along on your journey. I am sure it will help a lot of people. Many thanks!

  24. elouise parter says:

roman how is your baby doing? if you’re still having trouble with them holding things down as i’ve had the same wth old man after he came back from the vets. try mix a weak solution of rehydrate with egg yolk only and give about 1.5mls to start then slowly increase. everytime you increase wait 30mins to see if they hold it down if so give a bit more, the liver mix was made using finely diced lamb or calfs liver ( not pigs or chicken as this can be to rich/ contain parasites) you want about 100g into already boiling water about 2 pt and cook it for no more then 3 mins add a quarter of the recommended dosage for babies of rehydrate, blitz in a blender and cool. add 2 medium eggs and 1 yolk and blend. this needs to be refridgated but must be room temp at least as i’ve found they will throw up cold food/liquid. becareful of the powerade as it has a very high concertation of sugars so i’d suggest watering it down as to much sugar can cause dehydration. good luck and i hope pup feels better soon

  25. Roman says:

I have a jack russel chihuaha and I believe she has parvo. Im trying these as we speak. she isnt able to keep the egg down put she can hold the powerade down. Anything else I should try?

    • isak says:

If you read down through Elouise’s comments, she mentions a egg/liver broth mix. I am guessing this is mushed up cooked liver. These are both good sources of protein.

Perhaps you can cut back on the amount of egg in your mixture until your baby gets used to it? Or substitute the egg protein with liver or something else that’s tasty?

Above all else, what I learned from Elouise is to keep at it around the clock. She had her mom helping and they took shifts. Please keep in touch with your progress.

  26. elouise parter says:

well it was good news. he’d been back about 10hrs then attacked a kitten. we’ve had to isolate him fully, as he appears to be very aggressive. nice and happy and playful then goes nasty for a few seconds. wondering if it could be a side effect. either way we can’t risk the other animals ( cats in all ). howz mobley?

  27. elouise parter says:

old man is home. looks rough as hell but he’s home at least whoop whoop

    • isak says:

This is WONDERFUL news! I am sure that after a few days back at home, he will look much better! Congrats!!!! And big hugs to you all!

  28. elouise parter says:

hi bolt is doing very well, but her poor dad is being ambushed every hour lol, although she tires pretty quickly, she’s eating very well always hungry. old man is doing better eating but is still at the vets.

  29. elouise parter says:

i found that can get them to eat by themselves if the food is warmed and they also digest it better. (think it’s like when we smell fresh baked bread) i also found that if you give them cold water they’re more likely to throw it back up as it hits their stomachs quite heavily but luke warm water helps settle tummys. the vets are going to warm his food and water for him as i’ve explained that it also applys to other illnesses that cause bad tummys or disinterest in food, with the science behind it, and so far he’s shown an interest and licked it but hasn’t the strenght to eat, so i’ve asked them to mash it to slop or i can bring some. so fingers cross. i think environment does make a difference as bolt had mum and dad around where as chocolate and old man are on they’re own. although the vets have had to eat humble pie haha

  30. elouise parter says:

bolt is eating well, very hungry. playing with mum and dad. yippee. unfortunately we lost chocolate last night at 2215, but old man is doing ok. the vet’s said they were going to try him on food, they’re very surprised that bolt is doing so well. we managed to entice her to eat by warming dog food and they’re going to try it for old man, so fingers cross.

    • isak says:

So sorry to hear that we lost Chocolate. Hugs to you. I am thrilled to hear the great news about Bolt!

I hope Old Man will eat the warm food. Are they feeding him the same thing as you are feeding Bolt? I wonder if the home environment made a difference. There are so many germs in a clinic.

Thank you for keeping me in the loop.

  31. elouise parter says:

bolt has been drinking water on her own and this morning she stole the banana i was eating so i hand fed her a couple of bits of dog food which she took happily. she feels warmer to touch where as before she felt cold and like death (it’s a horrible way of putting it but it’s the only way to accurately discribe it). her coat is feelikng better and supple now, so maybe with lots of hope and luck she’ll pull through. at the moment she’s cuddled up with me sound asleep tucked up in MY quilt in the middle of my crossed legs, snoring.

  32. elouise parter says:

the 2 at the vets are chocolate female, who is like a little choco lab and old man male, who is like a balck and tan doberman ( a bit of a wider muzzle) with a large white bib and white goatee. bolt has just been lapping water on her own. whoop whoop

  33. elouise parter says:

from what i understand from the vets and the web is it is everywhere as it is pass by faecal matter dogs being nose to nose and like foot and mouthd diease humans can carry the particles on their clothing/shoes and such, so the only thing we can think of is we brought it in just by being out and about, especially as we’ve foxes in the area even though they can not get into our garden. this new strain has been around since 2007, like a mutated or mega version. according to our vets there is actually no cure for parvo and it has to simply put be out lived, they told us it has been known in some cases to pass to cats, they do have their own version but this one they could possibly get. i think it’s the there’s no meds that can cure it thing that is annoying, as the antibiotics being just for the secondary illnesses they could get and the pups going from being completely surrounded by others to all on their own. I’d never heard of parvo before today. they’re vaccinated under cpv. should be more coverage about it.

I seem to be hearing more and more about dogs getting parvo these days than I have in a while. Pretty sad that we can bring it home to our pets.

  35. elouise parter says:

an added problem is this strain can in rare cases pass to cats. which we have at the top of the house with 5 kittens born 11th sept. so we’ve moved them out to a friend’s just in case. they are kept separate anyway but with them pups gone they may venture downstairs. just until we’ve cleaned the house with bleach.

i’m giving her water/rehyd mix every 30 mins 10mls as she is dehydrated even though she’s not in the vom/dia stage yet, suspenion 1.5mls every 4.5 hours as it’s a mild one, eggy broth every hour until she humphs at me. all by syringe. pepto/water mix(50/50)3mls every 6-8 hours. the truth be told i don’t think the other 2 will survive. it was their eyes, it seemed they had given up. even the vet is upset as they were the ones who vaccinated them all at 12 weeks and the pups are 6 mths now. i’m just focusing on this 1 at home. my mother is taking the next 4 hrs as we live at hers so i can get some rest. we’re lucky so far that the adults haven’t got it, as we’ve been informed by the vet that the speed and strength points at it being the new super strain that is not vaccinated against. she’s sat here now wrapped in thick towels giving me evil looks as i’ve just given her eggy dose and she looks as if she’s peeved at the indignity at the syringe method ( she’s never liked it)
i have been next to her since 2 pm and not left her side, just keep caressing her ears and giving her lots of love and attention.
thanks for your reply and prayers, i’ll let you know whats happening along the way.

Your story touches my heart and brings tears to my eyes. She sounds like a fighter with her slightly stubborn streak about the syringe. You tow shall forever have a very special bond!

I hope you have misread the other two… just because.

If you can, send me some photos of the baby at home with you? I will send out a request for others to send you their prayers and wishes. What is her name?

i’m in the uk and i had 2 adult dogs and 8 pups. rotty x weimaraners. all vaccinated. all the pups got parvo. first signs of illness appeared early yesterday morning. we lost 1 late last night then 4 today. 2 are at the vets with it and 1 is home as the vets will only that 2. i’ve been looking on the web and have spoken to numerous vets in a bid to hospitalized the last 1. and unfortunately have found out that the newest strain is so strong that vaccinations mean nothing, whilst looking i’ve found so many people are very nasty about home treatments, at the moment i’m giving water, rehydration, child peptol, child suspension for fever/pain and egg/liver broth mix. the pup is holding out better then the ones at the vets. i’m holding out hope that this 1 will pull through. the 2 at the vets have gotten worst whilst i’ve been writing this.

Hugs to you. I am so sorry for your losses. It must be incredibly heartbreaking. I send you my prayers for the ones still fighting to live. Please keep me in the loop on your progress.

I am very happy to hear that what you are doing seems to be helping. How often are you attending to the pup?

  38. isak says:

From what I understand, what kills the babies is that they dehydrate to death — through throwing up and diarrhea. So please, please be sure they are getting liquids (even Gatorade would help). Keep working with them. Force the liquid into them if you have to. And best wishes to you.

MY pup is 12 weeks, he followed his mother off, he came back with parvo. I am trying to juggle school and work, between those times, I am trying my best with my GSH Lab. I am doing the pedilite and pepto, the eggs as often as possible. He throws up more with the egg, so I mixed it with the pedilite.

  41. Lynette says:

If this works I will pray for you and love you for the rest of my life. My 1 year and a half dog just died of parvo. I spent around $600 that I didn’t have on treatment that kept him alive for a week but suffered like crazy. And now his daughter which is 4 months just was diagnosed with parvo. Pray for me that your remedy works.

    • isak says:

My understanding is that dehydration is your worst enemy, so make sure she is hydrated. If she does not seem to be drinking, your may have to force liquid into her. If she throws up, replace that liquid. I am so sorry for your loss and certainly wish you the absolute BEST! Please let me know how things go. I will be thinking of you guys!

I just got my puppy a week ago, and she seems to have parvo. She’s a chihuahua jack russell terrier mix. How much should i give her? PLEASE reply.

Read the paragraphs under the DIRECTIONS part of the post. It tells you the quantity she used:

I took a raw egg and blended it with a fork and put it in the Syringe and force fed him. I gave him 2 tablespoons of egg and 1 tablespoon of Pedeilite every 4 hours for 3 days. I also gave him the children’s pill form of Pepto 3 times a day. I cut the pill in half and put it at the back of his throat.

After the 3 days was up I boiled instant rice and ground up hamburger and fed him 1/4 of a cup every four hours.

I had an experience 15 years ago. I had someone come look at a Shepherd puppy…..they brought PARVO with them. My course of treatment with two litters of sick pups.

    All PUPS in quarantine,

SubQ fluids every 4 hrs., Reglan shots 2 times a day, Albon and Flagyl daily for any dormant issues that may come up with the body compromised. Also the vet recommended Canine or Horse RED CELL. It is a wonderful sourse of iron which will bring the immune system stronger 2 cc twice a day. Also 4 cc of pedylite ever 3 to 4 hrs in a syringe. I pulled 15 out of 19 pups through. Starter food was sweet potato baby food, and Bil Jac make with goats milk to make a paste.

  44. isak says:

Good luck. And let us know.
