Can you help us return a stolen dog?

By isak, July 7, 2011

In May 2010, Missy was stolen from her owner’s car in Tucson when they stopped at a gas station to ask for directions. In the more than a year that has past, her owner, Amber, has not stopped looking for her — regularly checking with the shelter, placing ads on Craigslist, etc.

Even after she returned to Nebraska, Amber kept looking for Missy.

Now there has been a break. Missy has been found. She is in the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson, Arizona. Above is a photo of her as she looks now.

Time is of the essence. We are asking for everyone’s help. Is there a rescue or a kind soul who will step forward and pull Missy from the shelter?

Contact Amber at 402-601-7086 or via Facebook. Or comment on this post.

UPDATE: Amber and a friend are driving to Tucson to pick up Missy. We will update you as details become available. I wish them a safe journey and a happy reunion.

I was told she was adopted. I know it was my dog. I drove a convertible stopped at a gas station and some guy in a van grabbed her. I still have her pictures on my wall. I loved that dog so much!

We sadly all want to see what we would hope to see; the dog in the pic looks long neglected and with darker hair than the pic of the real Missy.I so so hope that whoever took Missy is treating her well.My own dog was kidnapped earlier this year by a substitute dog walker who I had never met before but because the dogwalking co. I used for over 2 yrs. had sent her/him (yup, it was that weird) I trusted her/him too.If it hadn’t been for a dear pet-sitting co. owner friend of mine and her cross-country contacts and the quick work of 2 police officers I might not have ever seen my sweet dog again. The worse thoughts came from wondering how a dog-thief would treat the pet that they stole knowing that they had a larcenous & cold heart first and foremost since they obviously didn’t care about the effects of stealing a beloved dog to both the dog and their family.
Thank you so much for the update.I would hope the same recovery for every stolen pet that I had with mine.

Oh my goodness! You really are so lucky. Why did him/her steal your dog? Do you know? Because he/she liked your dog or to sell it? I have heard there is quite a business in stealing to re-sell, reclaim the reward or even add breeding stock to a breeding business. And maybe somewhere in the mix are people who steal a pet because they want that particular pet. Hey, if you want to tell me more about your story and send some photos, I would love to blog about it so other people can be aware and more mindful.

Hello again. I know that this story was published some time ago but I just found your wonderful site and am kinda playing catchup with the outcome of many of your stories but did Amber reunite with her Missy? She looks so lost and sad in the pic of her in the shelter.I pray that they have and are together forever now.
    THank you.

Sadly, it seems that this was not Missy. This was a determination made by the shelter based on info they had. Amber decided to make the journey back to Tucson to look for herself and, even if it turned out to not be Missy, adopt this baby. However I don’t believe that journey ever happened. I lost communication with Amber. A rescue in Tucson told me they thought this dog had an owner who would be returning for the dog, and if not, they felt she would be easy to home.

I really wanted this to be Amber’s dog, you know?
