NATIONAL STATISTICS: Only 1 out of 10 dogs born ever get a home. Only 1 out of 12 cats born ever find a home. 800 dogs & cats are KILLED each HOUR in the U.S. because there are not enough homes for them.
Saving one animal may not change the world, but it will surely change the world for that one animal.
Wow! Doesn’t that speak volumes.
Did you know there is a large “underground railroad” going on all the time moving cats and dogs from shelters and rescue facilities to other rescue facilities or even forever homes? The only commitment is driving a dog/cat or dogs/cats from point A to point B, generally about an hour or maybe 90 minutes one way. It’s an incredibly organized process… you are but a cog in the wheel albeit an important cog. And what a great benefit you provide.
If you are interested in doing something like this, search yahoo groups for “pet transport” and peruse the postings to see if someone has a “leg” of the journey going through your area that you can sign up for. You will be surprised how many fur babies are being moved about the country in an effort to save lives.
Kudos to all the volunteers!
Thanks for discussing this important part of dog and cat rescue. I wrote a book about transporting animals to safety called “Every Rescued Dog Has a Tale: Stories from the Dog Rescue Railroad”. The book is available on Amazon and in bookstores. We have donated ALL profits back to rescues and rural shelters. If you are interested in becoming part of “the railroad”, I hope you check it out for how to get started and read some of the very happy endings of these animals.
