Since 1982, large colorful animals have been creeping their way across the world — emerging from the water, leaping over city streets, standing atop buildings, walking over bridges and circling through courtyards. The animals are created from recycled plastic bottles by the Cracking Art Group, a group which consists of six members from Italy, France and Belgium who derived their name from the term used to describe the transformation of petroleum to plastic, called ‘catalytic cracking’. All six artists use the medium of plastic to give rise to their own interpretation of “our contemporary problems and tensions.” They even recycle their old installations into new artworks.
