This is a partial list that is being circulating around showing some of the reasons an animal may be killed in one of our kill shelters. In my opinion, it is simply a list of excuses for the purpose of either easing someone’s guilt about taking a life or granting them a pardon for their laziness.

Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet, an ALL volunteer 501c3 nonprofit public charity formed in January 2005 after learning that military service members across the country had pets that needed a caring, loving, and safe home to care for them during the pet owner’s deployment to fight the global war on terrorism (combat or peace keeping missions), but had been unable to find someone to care for them.

Seems that “big brother” in the form of surveillance video from the Walker County Humane Society in Alabama has reared its head to show us what a gentle and willing dog Boost in the last hour of his life. The video contradicts Director Lane Reno’s statements that Boost would not come out of his carrier and had to be pulled out using a carrier pole. Rather, it shows Boost walking into the shelter on a leash quite willingly.

One of the many tax cuts Gov Schwarzenegger is proposing is one that has been previously defeated but I guess he hopes that Californians who are feeling the pinch will let it get through this time, is to kill animals at shelters faster. He wants to cut the hold time on strays and lost pets from 6 days to 3 days, saying it will save the state $24.6 million.

There are no cages at this animal shelter. Dogs and cats are housed in comfortable quarters that resemble bedrooms and living rooms while waiting to be adopted. Avanzino explains that’s because Americans think of pets as family members.

The reaction to my new job as manager of animal services for Washington County is very different. The phrase I hear most often: “I could never do your job.” Apparently, working at an animal shelter is too depressing for most people to contemplate. The reality is that modern shelters, like the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter where I work, are joyful places to be.

Recently, a South Carolina seizure-alert dog was euthanized at the Beaufort County Animal Control and Shelter just minutes before the owner called in. She had been picked up around the corner from her own home on the day she got out by animal control responding to a call about a loose dog.

Boost was let down by everyone involved. All he did was get out like mischievous pups do on occasion. This should not have been a death sentence.
